Isobel is saved from a tricky situation in Marakesh's souk by Jay Brooke. He is smooth-talking and handsome, and happens to stay in the same hotel where Isobel and her husband are staying.From the get-go, we have a strong feeling that Isobel is not happy in her marriage. Or perhaps she is simply bored? Her husband, Peter, is all about his work, and what she wants is romance. To quote: "...a night of dining under the stars with music, dancing, and horse riding across desert dunes..." Fifteen year of marriage to a workaholic just might do that to a woman, that's understandable. Jay is a businessman, just like Peter, but he is more adventurous, a different type of person who can, perhaps, give her what she wants.
This is the beginning of the story of Isobel's journey that would lead her into a romance and deception, punctuated with a lot of steamy encounters, and ending with her seeing that the life of lies she's created is closing in around her.
However, the way I read it, the book is not just about Isobel's ill-conceived idea of eroticism. There are plenty of characters in this novel who play pivotal roles as well - Peter and Jay and also Andy represent the male side; Isoble, Maria, Gina, Lucy, and Rusty stand for the women's team. The storyline becomes a complex game between the characters playing for the stakes of pleasure and dominance (not that kind, get your minds out of the gutter, people.)
The only problem I see here is that there's really no problem - nothing to solve, nothing of importance to achieve, nothing to overcome. There is Isobel, of course, who needs some excitement but it hardly qualifies in my opinion; twists, and turns, and the problems that arise throughout the story do, however, keep the narrative going. So, one way to think of it, this is about a bunch of rich folk who are so bored with their lives that they would do anything childish and absurd just to feel something. On the other hand, that pretty much is the premise of any soap opera out there and they work beautifully.
The writing style is very polished and sophisticated, the main storyline and the subplots are well put together. If you like complex stories, do give this one a try.

This it folks - the full story!
It includes the 'When a Siren Calls - prequel' but not the 'Saving Jay - prequel' so you really need to read that one first. You don't have to but it will give you more of a background.
I am not going to recap the story as that always ruins it for me. Yes it is a love story with a bit of drama but it's not the 'hearts and flowers' kind. Not everyone gets their happily ever after.
Warning - if you don't like sex and infidelity then stay clear!
I have always preferred how female authors write anything to do with romance better than the males but not in this case. It is very well written and I didn't want to put it down (just ask my family how I handled their interuptions - lol!).
Well done Mr Barry! Well done! You are definitely on my favourite authors list! When can we look forward to more?
In Tom Barry's novel When the Siren Calls, we're introduced to Jay Brooke, a wheeler-dealer real estate manipulator with a smooth line for hooking naïve investors and a fatal attraction to women. Working an iffy time-share deal in Tuscany, Jay meets Isobel Roberts, a frustrated woman married to a workaholic, and seeking meaning in her life. As these two planets orbit closer and closer to each other, circumstances conspire to cause perturbations in both lives.
Lucy has her sights on Jay, and has hooks in him. The time-share deal, which he has drawn his friend Andy into, is in danger of coming apart at the seams, and Jay finds himself painted not so neatly into a corner; with no apparent escape.
Suspenseful, touching, erotic; all are adjectives that aptly describe Barry's handling of this novel that defies neat categorization. The author's familiarity with the setting is apparent in every scene, and he uses setting extremely well to establish mood. The characters in When the Siren Calls are a troupe of complex, flawed creatures, driven by greed, loneliness, the desire for revenge, but most importantly, by the need to be noticed.
Though not a mystery, this is a page-turner that is guaranteed to keep you up late. It has humor, suspense, and will keep you reading until the last page; and then, salivating for more.
Till Death Do Us Part (Al Pennyback Mysteries)
This book was chosen by my book club, and is not my usual genre. If you like literary type books in the romantic suspense genre this is a pearl of a book. It reminded me of D.H Lawrence at his best. If you like the staple rom-com hearts and flowers formula, you may struggle with this book.
As to the story itself, it's about two things, infidelity and corruption, interwoven around two people - Isobel and Jay. She is an older, neglected woman married to a workaholic, he is a businessman and a player looking to save his business. Both characters, indeed all the main characters, are multi-dimensional, at times you love them, at times you hate them. Which is one of the reasons this book is different from the herd. Isobel pursues Jay to Tuscany and abandons herself in a steamy affair, and finds herself caught up in a world of deception and betrayal. What kept me turning the pages was the suspense and the twists and turns, you never knew quite what to expect next.
This is a sensual story but I wouldn't call it erotica. Another reviewer called it 'the thinking woman's fifty shades', but there is so much substance in this book beyond the sex, and it is almost poetry to read at times, that I think any comparison with Fifty Shades is misleading. If you like an intelligent read, this could be the best book you've read in a long time!
